Editing a chapter

Reading a chapter, unlocking it to edit, rewriting a single passage or the whole thing, adding images, and going back to an earlier version.

Reflects YourBook 1.5 · Updated 11 September 2026

A written chapter opens ready to read, in book typography, so you can judge it the way a reader would. When something isn't right, you can change a word, rewrite a paragraph, steer the whole chapter with a note, or go back to an earlier version.

Reading a chapter

Open a chapter from the Book tab. You'll see the chapter heading ("CHAPTER TWELVE"), the prose, and a footer with the word count, estimated pages and version ("1,842 words · ~6 pages · v3"). A drawer on the left lists all your chapters for quick jumping.

The chapter opens locked. Tap Unlock to edit this chapter to make changes, and Lock — back to reading when you're done.

Editing passage by passage

Under the hood a chapter is a sequence of passages, called beats. When the chapter is unlocked, each passage offers:

  • Edit: change the text yourself, then Save or Cancel.
  • Rewrite: have the app rewrite just this passage, with optional instructions such as "make it shorter" or "more dialogue".
  • Lock this passage: keep this exact wording even if the whole chapter is regenerated later.
  • A menu with Move up, Move down and Delete.

Changing the whole chapter

The overflow menu holds the chapter-level actions:

  • Copy text copies the whole chapter.
  • Edit title.
  • Revise with feedback is the best way to steer a chapter. Type what you want changed ("less about the farm, more about Mum; warmer tone") and tap Revise chapter. The app writes a new version guided by your note.
  • Rewrite from your story regenerates the entire chapter from everything you've gathered. The confirmation warns that it replaces the whole text and suggests Revise with feedback for smaller changes. Locked passages survive.
  • Delete chapter.

While a chapter is being written

A progress panel narrates the seven steps: Extracting sources → Preparing transcripts → Planning narrative → Writing chapter (beat by beat) → Reviewing quality → Revising draft → Finalizing, with a step counter.

If nothing moves for more than ten minutes, the panel flags a stall and offers Resume from, Retry from or Restart generation. See Chapter generation seems stuck.

The Context panel

Open it with Context (or Expand context). It has three tabs.

  • Outline is a passage navigator for jumping around a long chapter.
  • Images lets you upload a photo or Generate one (choose a style, a palette, or write your own prompt), then Place in chapter at the position you choose. Images show as "Available" or "In Chapter". Once placed, you can edit the caption, move it to another passage, or remove it.
  • History lists every version of the chapter (Generated, Regenerated, Revision, New material), each with View this version.

"Limited source material. Consider recording more." means the chapter is being written from very little. The fix is always the same: go back to Story or Material to gather more, then Rewrite. See Talking to your interviewer and Adding letters, photos and documents.
